Biography
Harry P. Harmer was president of United Electrical and Radio Workers Local 103 in Camden, New Jersey. The Daily Worker of August 1, 1936, page 2, reports that he was out on bail after taking part in a hunger strike in Camden jail during the RCA strike. In a letter thanking the International Labor Defense, he describes police violence, hired strikebreakers and court prejudice, and credits defense attorneys Saul C. Waldbaum, Louis F. McCabe, Abraham Isserman and Samuel Rothbard. The report does not establish his formal charge, sentence, exact arrest or bail-release date, or actual time held.
The Daily Worker of July 28, 1936, page 1, in a Camden July 27 dispatch, individually names Powers Hapgood and Harry P. Harmer among eighteen RCA-strike prisoners on hunger strike in Camden jail. A deputy said they refused supper the previous night, while the report calls the strike declared that day; this ambiguity is preserved without assigning an exact start day. The $160,000 bail figure is an aggregate for the group, not an individual bond. This corroborates actual detention in the existing RCA case; it gives no new arrest, discharge, final sentence or completed custody total. Kendrick identifies the Camden union leader as held on a riot accusation at $10,000 bail and includes him with Hapgood among the twenty-four hunger strikers released after supporters raised bail. The two-day hunger strike is not the full duration of imprisonment; exact arrest and physical release days remain unprinted. New Masses, August 11, 1936, original PDF page 12. RCA Local 103 president Harry P. Harmer was held July 23 under $10,000 bond on charges of inciting and engaging in riot as a member of an unlawful mob. This is bail and an accusation, not an imposed prison term.
