Biography

Harry Clifton was a Workers Alliance demonstrator arrested in April 1936 at the WPA store in New York's Port Authority Building. Workers had been waiting to keep an appointment with an official and refused orders to leave. His attorneys Abraham Abromowitz and Bernard Stone obtained a habeas-corpus writ and Justice Carew dismissed Clifton's case on former-jeopardy grounds after a witness had already been sworn at an April 24 hearing. Magistrate Aurelio nevertheless continued proceedings against two other unnamed defendants. The dismissal is not assigned an exact physical discharge day.
