Biography

Gus Lipkin, also recorded as Gust Lipkin, was an Industrial Workers of the World member detained in US immigration deportation proceedings. The IWW archives at Wayne State University preserve records of his 1918 deportation hearing in Leadville, Colorado. The One Big Union Monthly lists him among detainees transported from Seattle on February 6, 1919, to Ellis Island, arriving February 11. The same contemporary list records his release from Ellis Island on March 23, 1919. His initial arrest date and the terms of his release have not been established.

The partial Red Special roster prints Gust Lipkin among IWW detainees sent from Seattle February 6, 1919 and arriving at Ellis Island February 11. This is a custodial transfer, not an original arrest date. The same page individually lists his March 23 release. Name variation is preserved; no exact total is calculated from these transfer dates.

Vecellio’s May list appears to print G. Lidbking in a group assigned a March 17, 1919 Ellis Island release, whereas the June list individually gives Gust Lipkin’s release as March 23. This spelling/date conflict is preserved; the established March 23 endpoint is not overwritten from an uncertain identification.
