Biography

George Phillips was one of five workers arrested during a demonstration outside the North Harlem Relief Station at 271 West 127th Street, demanding assistance for a Black woman with four children who had been denied relief for two months. The June 28, 1932 Daily Worker reports that the disorderly-conduct cases were dismissed before Judge Leonard McGee in Manhattan Fifth District Court, after the workers represented themselves and the woman testified for them. The report establishes arrest followed by freedom by publication; it supplies no exact arrest, physical discharge day or complete custody duration. Its later reference to four workers is an internal count error: it expressly names five. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1932/v09-n153-jun-28-1932-DW-LOC.pdf#page=1
