Biography

Frieda Jackson, organizer of the Upper Harlem Unemployment Council, was beaten and jailed during the June 30, 1934 police attack on a Union Square relief meeting, according to the July 7 issue. The July 14 follow-up reports $500 bail each fixed by Magistrate Leonard McGee on Tuesday, July 10, and referral to the grand jury on accusations of assaulting police. Witness accounts challenge the alleged weapons evidence. No exact physical release or completed jail duration is supplied. Identity with the separate Freda Jackson record from the 1930 City Hall delegation remains unestablished. Daily Worker, July 7, 1934, page 2.
