Biography

Frederick Welsh was a Black worker described as a militant by the Daily Worker of May 14, 1934. It reports his arrest on the previous Monday for possession of policy slips, a guilty finding in Bronx County Court the previous Wednesday, and continued detention for investigation. The newspaper called the accusation a frame-up. Sentencing was scheduled for Tuesday, May 15; no sentence or later outcome is established.

The May 8, 1934 Daily Worker identifies Welsh as chairman of the Committee Against Discrimination of CWA and Unemployed Workers. It reports his arrest the previous day at Allerton Avenue station while travelling to a downtown meeting, on possession-of-policy-slips accusations characterized as a frame-up. He was held at Bronx County Jail under $500 bail and attributed the arrest to his work opposing discrimination in CWA and Home Relief Bureau policies. This adds role, location and bail details to the existing May 7 arrest, not a duplicate case. The May 7 dispatch reports his arrest while going to a Bronx anti-discrimination meeting, alleged policy slips and detention in Bronx County Jail. The headline gives $300 bail while the body gives $500; neither conflicting amount is silently selected. Later trial evidence remains intact.
