Biography

Page 2's March 31 St. Petersburg dispatch identifies Fred Willis as a Black relief worker held nearly four months in the Clearwater county jail without charges filed or bail set. It says he defended himself against a white WPA airport foreman, Bob Saylor, who allegedly drew a gun. A defense committee was seeking his freedom, but the paper says an assault-with-intent-to-kill trial might occur in May despite acknowledgment that no charge had been filed. His expected release was not an accomplished fact. No exact individual custody endpoints or completed duration are supplied.
