Biography
Frank Carlson, a New Jersey district organizer of the Young Communist League, was among twelve youths arrested while picketing in Newark against disciplinary action directed at West Orange Civilian Conservation Corps strikers. Page 3 says their trial was scheduled for Tuesday, January 22, 1935, in the Second Precinct Court, Seventh and Summer Avenues, before Judge Seymour Klein. Sol Golat represented eleven; Carlson was to defend himself on a charge of profanity in a policeman’s presence. The report establishes no verdict or custody endpoints. Identity with the existing California McCarran Act detainee Frank Carlson is unproven, so this New Jersey defendant is recorded separately. The January 15, 1935 Daily Worker, page 2, identifies Carlson among twelve young workers arrested Saturday, January 12, while picketing Newark CCC headquarters against suppression of the West Orange CCC strike. It announces a January 23 hearing before Judge Seymour. That announced date differs from the later January 21 report's January 22 setting and is retained as a changing court schedule rather than a completed hearing. Actual discharge remains unknown.
