Biography

Frances Ellis is individually named in John Howard Lawson’s report among writers and professional workers arrested June 6, 1934 while peacefully picketing the Macaulay publishing offices at 381 Fourth Avenue in support of striking office employees. Police took them to the station; Magistrate Jonah Goldstein demanded an end to picketing, then ordered an immediate trial after they objected. The defense secured unconditional release. The report calls the group eighteen but prints sixteen individual names; no additional names are invented. No statutory charge or measured custody total is stated.
