Biography
Esther Carroll was among seven workers arrested when police broke up a Communist election-campaign meeting in Brooklyn. The November 23 issue says Esther Carroll, Hannah Scherer and L. A. De Santes were tried on November 13, the first two for disorderly conduct. The magistrate reserved decision until the announced Monday hearing in Sixth District Court, 495 Gates Avenue. The article gives no actual arrest day, verdict, physical jail admission or release; a reserved decision is not a conviction. The Daily Worker of October 31, 1931 reports seven arrests when police broke up a Communist election meeting at 50th Street and Fifth Avenue in South Brooklyn, and says all seven were released on parole the previous day. Its Thursday arrest and yesterday release references normalize to October 29 and October 30, 1931 from the Saturday masthead; those day numbers are calendar interpretations, not printed numerical dates. The report prints only the surnames Caroll, Scherer and DeSantis. They are linked collectively to Esther Carroll, Hannah Scherer and L. A. De Santes through the November 23 account of the same seven-person Brooklyn election-meeting prosecution and its November 13 proceedings, rather than by a surname alone. This supplements the earlier account, which did not supply custody dates. The release was on parole, not an acquittal; no exact jail-admission date or measured total time served is established.
