Biography
Emily Nesbitt Johnston is a Seattle poet, writer and climate activist. On October 11, 2016, she and fellow Valve Turner Annette Klapstein shut emergency valves on two Enbridge tar-sands pipelines near Leonard, Minnesota, after giving the company advance notice. Authorities arrested and booked her into the Clearwater County jail, and she was later released on bail. On October 9, 2018, the trial judge acquitted the defendants after prosecutors rested, finding that the state had not proved criminal damage to the pipelines. The exact jail-release date has not been established.
An October 17, 2017 report identifies Robert Tiffany as the judge allowing a climate-necessity defense, before the separately recorded 2018 acquittal.
