Biography

Elba Chase Nelson was a New Hampshire Communist organizer and the party’s 1938 candidate for governor. During the state attorney general’s anti-subversion investigation, a judge ordered her to answer questions and found her in contempt when she refused. She spent the nights of December 7 and 8, 1953 in the Valley Street Jail in Manchester before being released after purging the contempt.
