Biography
Einosuke Yamaguchi, also recorded as Enosuke Yamaguchi and Pauley, was a Japanese radical organizer in Los Angeles and a mentor to Karl Yoneda. Police arrested him at a Brooklyn Avenue forum on January 3, 1930 under California’s Criminal Syndicalism Act. During a Trade Union Unity League demonstration to organize unemployed workers in March 1930, he was arrested with Hakomori and Fukunaga, jailed and fined $500. Authorities subsequently placed him in deportation proceedings. He left Lincoln Heights Jail in August 1932 after the International Labor Defense secured permission for voluntary departure to the Soviet Union rather than deportation to Japan.
Labor Defender, July 1932, reproduces a May 22, 1932 letter signed E. Yamaguchi from Lincoln Heights Jail. The existing Los Angeles organizer’s name, facility and 1932 immigration chronology provide the match. He appeals for ILD branch work and reading material and predicts he will be out within seventy-five days or sooner. This proves a dated custody observation, not a completed seventy-five-day term or an actual release on the predicted day; the established later August release remains separate evidence. Yushi Yamazaki (2020), printed pp. 91–96, 102–103, identifies Yamaguchi as the organizer who recruited and mentored Karl Yoneda in the Japanese Workers Association and ILD. It corroborates the January 3, 1930 Brooklyn Avenue forum arrest and the distinct March 1930 TUUL unemployment-demonstration arrest with Hakomori and Fukunaga, jail and a $500 fine each. It includes him among four previously charged under criminal-syndicalism legislation and ordered to leave alongside the 1932 Long Beach deportees. The statutory seventy-two-hour detention authority is a general rule, not proof of Yamaguchi's complete service. Existing August 1932 departure evidence remains unchanged.
