Biography

Edwin Westphal was held under guard in an alcoholic ward at the Federal Rehabilitation Camp in Fort Eustis, Virginia, according to a worker correspondent in the May 23, 1935 Daily Worker. During a camp forum he criticized director Murphy over alleged graft involving paid movie admission and overpriced beer. Several days later he was seized and confined despite reportedly never drinking, could not leave without an escort of guards, and was held for three days before expulsion from the camp. This is a reported retaliatory institutional confinement for speaking at a camp forum; no formal criminal charge or exact custody dates are supplied.
