Biography
John Askew was a Portsmouth defendant whose unconditional release at a fourth trial is recorded as an ILD defense victory. The February 1934 Labor Defender says the organization conducted mass action during three earlier trials and entered his legal defense just before the fourth. It supplies no underlying charge or individual arrest, jail admission or release day, and the repeated trials are not treated as four separately proven arrests. The January 1934 Labor Defender’s defense report identifies the underlying accusation against Askew as murder, while the separately documented fourth-trial unconditional release remains the later disposition. Page 6's South Norfolk worker correspondence links poor Black children's conditions and unequal sentencing to John Askew's imprisonment. It supplies neither the underlying accusation nor a new conviction or exact day. This is contemporary local corroboration, not another case, and does not replace the later fourth-trial release report.
