Biography

Eddie Blunt, a seventeen-year-old Black Harlem youth, was shot twice in the abdomen by officer Fred Barts and died five days later in Harlem Hospital while under arrest. Sadie Van Veen reported the event on February 5, 1936 as about a year earlier. Barts was investigating a sixty-eight-cent robbery several blocks away, called to Blunt, and shot when he ran. The article describes his mother struggling to see him and receiving a collect death telegram. It supplies no precise event day, statutory charge, or finding that Blunt committed the robbery. The March 28, 1935 editorial describes Eddie Blunt as eighteen and says he died in Harlem Hospital four days after being shot twice by Fred Barts during a sixty-six-cent robbery investigation. The later February 1936 account already recorded describes him as seventeen, gives five days, and reports a sixty-eight-cent robbery. Both identify the youth and officer, but their age and elapsed-time claims differ. The earlier article supplies no precise shooting or death day, and does not itself establish a formal arrest or uninterrupted hospital custody. The conflicting counts are not substituted for exact custody endpoints or a calculated jail-time total.
