Biography

Ed Nehmer was a communist candidate for Wisconsin secretary of state arrested with John Hilty and other members of a Wisconsin election tour at its Sheboygan meeting on Thursday night, September 25, 1930. The report describes police returning with reinforcements after Burke continued speaking to about 500 workers. Police said the speakers needed a permit. All four were eventually released following audience protests; no exact physical discharge day or complete detention duration is supplied. The March 15, 1930 Daily Worker photograph caption prints Edward Nehmer and explicitly identifies him among Milwaukee workers jailed for taking part in the March 6 unemployment demonstration. This earlier Milwaukee episode is separate from the September 25 Sheboygan election-tour arrest. Exact physical discharge, statutory charge, sentence and total time held are not supplied.
