Biography
Donald Williams served as Deputy Minister of Defense of Afro Set, a Black nationalist organization in Cleveland, during the early 1970s. The FBI investigated him in connection with his role in the organization. A 1995 federal appeals decision records weapons arrests in July and August 1971, an October 1971 murder prosecution alongside Harllel Jones and other Afro Set members, a guilty plea to lesser charges, and release from prison in 1973. The exact imprisonment start and release day remain unverified. His later 1984 capital conviction concerned a separate case and should not be conflated with the Afro Set proceedings.
Documented proceedings
The court in Williams v. FBI, 69 F.3d 1155 (D.C. Cir. 1995), identifies Williams as Afro Set’s Deputy Minister of Defense. It records a concealed-weapon arrest in July 1971 and an FBI arrest on August 19, 1971, involving a pistol and ammunition. It also describes a federal charge arising from firearm purchases in which a prior felony conviction had not been disclosed; that charge’s exact date and disposition are not established here.
In October 1971 Williams was charged alongside Harllel Jones and other Afro Set members in connection with the August 1970 shootings. The opinion states that Williams pleaded guilty to lesser charges, without identifying those offenses or his sentence length. It reports his release from prison in 1973 but does not establish a continuous custody period beginning with either weapons arrest.
Scope and unresolved details
This entry documents the early-1970s Afro Set proceedings. The same opinion describes a separate 1984 capital conviction and his subsequent effort to obtain FBI records for his defense. The 1973 release is historical, not a claim about his current custody status. No current custody status, exact incarceration start, exact release day, birth date, or identified photograph has been established for this entry.
