Biography

Desmond Mackin was an Irish republican detained in New York during British extradition proceedings. Revolutionary Worker reported his October 10, 1980 arrest and subsequent detention at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. It reported that he remained jailed after an August 13, 1981 ruling rejecting extradition under the political-offense exception.

The September 11, 1981 report describes Mackin’s arrest at a New York demonstration protesting Prince Philip’s visit and his detention at the Metropolitan Correctional Center from October 1980. It reports that Magistrate Naomi Buchwald rejected the British extradition request on August 13, 1981 under the treaty’s political-offense exception, but that Mackin remained held without bail as further proceedings were pursued. This ruling is not recorded as physical release.
