Biography

Daoud Bey was a member of the Richmond, California, branch of the Black Panther Party. On February 9, 1970, Bey was driving to collect Panthers Joe Veale and Eugene Balthazar after their newspaper sales and to pick up food for the party’s Free Breakfast for Children Program when Richmond police stopped him. A first-person account published in The Black Panther describes Bey and the two other Panthers being held in police-station cells; Veale and Balthazar’s charges were dropped, while Bey faced traffic charges. The available source documents actual custody but does not establish how long Bey was held or the final disposition of those traffic counts.
