Biography
Coltrane Chimurenga, born Randolph Simms, was a Black liberation organizer, Pan-Africanist, and field marshal of the December 12th Movement. Federal agents arrested him on October 18, 1984 as a New York 8+ defendant and prosecutors called him the central figure in an alleged RICO conspiracy involving bank expropriations and prison escapes. He remained jailed beyond the January 29, 1985 bail order while the bond arrangements were completed; his actual discharge date remains unverified. In August 1985, the jury acquitted the defendants of the principal RICO conspiracy charges while returning weapons-possession and false-identification convictions against several defendants. Chimurenga continued organizing through the December 12th Movement until his death on May 13, 2019.
Bail order is not release
January 29, 1985 was an oral order permitting bail, not an actual discharge. The appellate opinion states he remained jailed pending property appraisal and mortgage recording at oral argument. The previous exact release and calculated continuous duration are therefore removed. The defense publication separately reports January 21 contempt for refusing handwriting or voice samples while already held; this is an overlapping legal basis, not a second newly admitted stay. Actual discharge remains unresolved. Arrest-day sources conflict: the contemporary defense report gives October 17, while the primary appellate chronology gives October 18. This audit now records October 18 from the appellate chronology and retains this explicit conflict disclosure.

1980s custody-date audit: primary appellate chronology
The appellate opinion dates the original eight defendants arrest and initial detention October 18, 1984; the district-court caption identifies each defendant and Judge Robert L. Carter. Release orders, bond arrangements and actual discharge remain distinct. No exact bail-release date or uninterrupted duration is asserted. 760 F.2d 400; 609 F. Supp. 1066.
Workers Vanguard reports that Chimurenga was arrested on the night of July 16, 1987, four miles from the Monroe, New York traffic stop involving Robert Taylor, on an allegation of driving without a license. It presents the arrests as part of continuing police targeting of the New York Eight after their earlier federal prosecution. This is a reported later arrest, not the October 1984 initial detention; no subsequent admission, disposition or custody duration is established here.
