Defense pamphlet: distinct custody phases and date limits
The National Committee to Defend Dessie Woods pamphlet The Story of Dessie Woods (June 1978 second edition, printed pp. 2–4, 11–12) reports an initial three-day Reidsville detention after Todd and Woods set out June 14, 1975, followed by release after money was wired and a separate arrest in the Horne case. It says the indictment was quashed after the September 2, 1975 challenge and both women obtained freedom on bond pending reindictment. It identifies Todd’s later verdict as theft by taking and describes a five-year sentence with three and one-half years on probation, with Todd allowed to remain free on bond pending appeal. That imposed sentence does not prove that she actually served the remaining one and one-half years. The pamphlet internally conflicts over sentencing: it says the February 2 verdict was followed by a ten-day delay, then gives February 2 as sentencing day. It also conflicts with other sources over the June shooting/arrest chronology. No exact custody, sentencing or release date is inferred from these contradictions.
