Biography
Chelsea Manning was an intelligence analyst for the U.S Army who disclosed to Wikileaks a video of a United States Apache helicopter firing on civilians in New Baghdad in 2007. The video shows Americans shooting and killing 11 individuals including 2 journalists. Manning was convicted of leaking the video and sentenced to 35 years. After serving 7 years her sentenced was commuted by President Obama. Manning later was subpoenaed to testify in a Grand Jury hearing against Julian Assange and spent several months in jail for refusing to testify.
The Hammond statements report Manning already held on civil contempt by the same Virginia grand jury in 2019. This corroborates the existing contempt detention and distinguishes it from her earlier military sentence; no new term or endpoint is inferred.
