Biography

Shamai Kedem Leibowitz is an Israeli-American lawyer, civil-rights activist and former FBI contract linguist. In 2009 he gave five Secret-level FBI documents to blogger Richard Silverstein, who published information derived from them. Leibowitz said that his work exposed what he believed were abuses of power and violations of law, that he first reported his concerns inside the FBI, and that he feared an Israeli attack on Iran. He pleaded guilty on December 17, 2009 to unlawfully disclosing classified communications intelligence. On May 24, 2010, a federal judge sentenced him to 20 months in prison and three years of supervised release.

Custody-phase review October 13, 2026: DOJ confirms the May 24, 2010 twenty-month sentence. FAS's June 5, 2012 report reproduces his firsthand prison-exit account, supporting 2011 but not an exact day. The federal locator matches full name Shamai Kedem Leibowitz, age 56, register 50835-037, noncustody as of January 13, 2012. The separate later federal endpoint is documented here rather than overwriting the physical-prison release year. The Samuel alias query returned no result, not proof of no custody. The unsupported 609 exact days are cleared; admission and transitional-custody dates remain unresolved.

Case

Charges: One count of knowingly and willfully disclosing classified communications intelligence, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 798(a)(3).
Sentenced: May 24, 2010
Released: 2011
Sentence: 20 months imposed May 24, 2010 followed by three years supervised release. Physical-prison release remains recorded only at 2011 year precision: a June 5, 2012 report reproduces his firsthand statement that he left minimum-security prison nearly a year earlier. BOP register 50835-037 gives a later January 13, 2012 federal-custody endpoint; that does not replace the earlier physical-prison exit. Exact admission, prison-exit day and halfway-house transitions remain unresolved. The 609-day sentence conversion is not documented actual imprisonment.
