Biography

Zinn reports that SNCC organizer Charles Sherrod was transferred to the Dawson jail in Terrell County during the December 1961 Albany campaign. Sherrod described a beating by Sheriff E. Z. Mathison and another man, solitary confinement from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and return to Albany to make an FBI statement. The six-and-a-half-hour solitary interval is not the total imprisonment duration, and transfer back to Albany is not release.
