Biography
Charles Jensen was a Socialist and member of the Modern Democrats arrested in the November 30, 1935 Tampa raid. The Daily Worker individually distinguishes Jensen and Rousch from Joseph Shoemaker, Eugene Poulnot and Dr. Sam Rogers: it reports that Jensen and Rousch escaped the subsequent flogging because they had many local friends. Its May 19, 1936 Bartow dispatch discusses the exclusion of their testimony about the group's municipal-reform and production-for-use program. The claim about why they escaped flogging is attributed to the newspaper. No individual physical release day, statutory charge or completed custody total is supplied. The April 16 Bartow dispatch in the April 17, 1936 Daily Worker identifies him as Charles E. Jensen, state secretary of the Socialist Party. It reports that Jensen and Walter Roush were the first prosecution witnesses to testify in the trial of Tampa police-Klansmen accused of kidnapping E. F. Poulnot. Jensen recounted the Modern Democrats’ experience on the night of November 30.
