Biography

Carrie Bennet was an International Labor Defense member arrested in Norfolk with two seamen identified only as Duncan and Walker after the seamen returned from a delegation seeking equal relief and clothing. The November 5, 1934 Daily Worker’s page 6 worker correspondence says police interrupted a visit to a Black household, alleged disorderly conduct and an interracial lap-sitting incident, and added a dangerous-weapon allegation concerning an old seaman’s knife. The defense campaign challenged the arrest as intimidation of interracial labor solidarity. The report gives fines of $10 and $20, but does not reliably assign the weapon allegation or each sum individually. No exact arrest, physical release or complete custody duration is given.
