Biography
Caroline Foulke Urie was a Quaker relief worker and founding member of the Peacemakers tax-refusal committee. Beginning in 1948, she withheld the portion of her federal income tax that she calculated would support military spending. Although she publicly said she was willing to go to jail, the government never prosecuted or imprisoned her for the refusal. She continued the protest until her death in 1955.
