Biography

Carlos Rosario Pantojas was an unaffiliated supporter of Puerto Rican independence. A federal grand jury investigating the December 1979 attack on a U.S. Navy bus at Sabana Seca called him in March 1980 and demanded handwriting, hair, and fingerprint samples, a photograph, and later his participation in a lineup. After he refused the lineup, the court found him in civil contempt and jailed him on May 9, 1980. When prosecutors tried to extend his confinement beyond the statutory maximum, a federal court ordered his release at the end of eighteen months. He was released on November 9, 1981 after 549 days.
