Biography

Carlo Stogle, formerly a miner at Gallup, New Mexico, was held in El Paso County jail from November 12, 1935 pending deportation to Czechoslovakia. A Federated Press dispatch of August 20, 1936 reports his actual release into an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer’s custody while the Department of Labor decided his status. Stogle attributed his arrest to participation in the 1934 Gallup miners’ strike and said he had taken out first citizenship papers after arriving in 1910. The exact release day and complete duration are not printed. The surname Stogle was verified on the original page; OCR incorrectly produced Stogie.
