Biography
Black Alabama prisoner serving a life term who lost both legs to gangrene after being denied medical care in custody. The Black Panther Vol. 19 no.10,11 (1979) reports he escaped Draper prison, was recaptured in 1979, fought extradition from Oregon with ACLU help, and sued Alabama corrections officials.
A report reprinted from the July 1979 Guild Notes states that Bass was captured in Portland on May 4, 1979 and later released from Rocky Butte Jail on bail while resisting extradition to Alabama. It also distinguishes his May 1978 departure while on furlough from an earlier December 1974 escape attempt, after which he lost both legs following alleged denial of medical care. The Oregon bail release did not establish the end of his Alabama life sentence.
