Biography
Bertha Gober was a nineteen-year-old Albany State College student, civil-rights organizer and later a member of the Freedom Singers. Police first arrested her on November 22, 1961 while she tested compliance with the Interstate Commerce Commission’s desegregation ruling at the Albany bus station. She refused bail and was released three days later. Police arrested her again during the Albany train-station confrontation on December 10; the exact release date for that episode and the final disposition have not been located.
Zinn’s contemporary account individually places this activist in the December 1961 Albany custody proceedings. He distinguishes the initial railway-terminal arrests, county-court proceedings and later group releases. Because the release accounts do not resolve every person’s exact custody trajectory, no exact individual discharge date or calculated total is inferred.
