Biography

Bernie Altman, of Retail Clothing Salesmen Local 1006, was arrested on a complaint by Louis Narins, proprietor of a Brooklyn clothing store at Manhattan Avenue and Grand Street. The August 21, 1936 report says he was acquitted the previous day in Bridge Plaza Magistrate’s Court, defended by Julia Algase, and then addressed a mass meeting outside the store. It connects the prosecution with a conflict over union leadership and the store. The exact arrest, physical release and complete custody total are unknown. Existing Ben Altman is identified only in a different Chicago 1925 clothing strike; no explicit identity bridge justifies merging them.
