Biography

Barney Oster was among five workers arrested when police attacked an Unemployment Councils delegation demanding relief at the Eighteenth Precinct relief bureau, 519 West 45th Street, New York. The Daily Worker of September 8, 1934, page 5, reports that the attack and arrests occurred the previous day and that all five faced disorderly-conduct charges. Two workers were badly beaten, but the article does not identify those two individually; no injury is therefore assigned to Barney Oster. It supplies no sentence, release or actual custody duration. Page 1 describes a second Eighteenth Precinct relief-delegation arrest on September 27, distinct from his September 7 case. It individually reports that Oster was beaten unconscious and held on $1,000 bail at the Fifty-Fourth Street Court House. Six named co-delegates received $100 bail each from Magistrate Stern; all cases were adjourned to October 5. Neither a sentence nor bail posting is established.
