Biography
Barbara Carter, age 22, was one of three women who chained themselves to heavy machinery at an Enbridge pipeline worksite near Stockbridge, Michigan in July 2013 to oppose expansion of the pipeline that ruptured into the Kalamazoo River in 2010. Convicted of misdemeanor trespassing and felony obstruction; 13 months probation plus $750 fine. Necessity defense raised.
The January 31, 2014 MICATS press release reports that, after guilty verdicts for trespass and resisting or obstructing an officer, Judge William Collette revoked bail and ordered immediate custody. Sentencing was scheduled for March 5. The press-release date establishes that this later remand had occurred by January 31; it does not independently establish the exact physical admission day.
