Biography

Balagoon Moyenda was a federal prisoner and African Culture Workshop organizer at FCI Phoenix, Arizona. In a signed letter published in June 1992, he described taking part in a peaceful march honoring Malcolm X and being placed in the special housing unit under a 23-hour lockdown. He reported a disciplinary finding for participating in a group demonstration, an ensuing hunger strike and eight years already spent in jail. His account alleged discriminatory treatment and retaliation affecting parole. The original conviction and exact custody endpoints are not established by the letter.

The June 12 report identifies Moyenda as education chairman of the African Culture Workshop at the federal prison in Phoenix. It links a May 19 Malcolm X memorial walk to a May 20 roundup, twenty prisoners placed in the Special Housing Unit, and a hunger strike and allegations of denied care and exercise. These are additional details of the existing May 1992 retaliation episode, not a second criminal sentence. A published letter and captioned group photograph place Moyenda at Leavenworth in the May 3, 1993 issue. This corroborates a later institution without establishing an exact transfer date or a new custodial admission.
