Biography

Anthony Panchelly was a Pacific Coast Marine Firemen’s Union member imprisoned with Edward Woodworth following the 1937 maritime strike in Hudson County, New Jersey. A Seattle district council resolution reports conviction for assaulting and robbing a strikebreaker, continued state imprisonment and rejection of their appeal by the New Jersey Supreme Court. The union attributed the prosecution to strike participation. The bound edge obscures the maximum term; no precise custody endpoints are printed. Voice of the Federation, July 6, 1940, page 6, names Donald R. Brown, Edward Woodworth and Anthony Panchelly as Marine Firemen convicted during the 1937 eastern maritime strike. It describes assault charges and fifteen-year terms for robbery, alleges no evidence that they possessed stolen money when seized, and reports three and a half years already spent in the penitentiary. That is an approximate interim service report, not completed custody or a calculated release date. A New Jersey parole-board appearance was expected that month; NMU and MFOW support and promised shipping rights were conditional on release. No parole grant is reported. Case

Charges: Assault and robbery of a strikebreaker during the 1937 maritime strike in Hudson County.
Sentence: Earlier report gives an indeterminate sentence with fourteen-year minimum. Voice of the Federation, July 6, 1940, page 6, describes a fifteen-year robbery term and about three and a half years already served, with a parole application pending. This clarifies the previously obscured maximum without treating the interim service report as completed confinement. Source: https://archive.ilwu.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/19400706.pdf
