Biography

Lance Corporal Anthony Mathews was one of the Camp Pendleton 14, Black Marines arrested and jailed after confronting what they believed was a Ku Klux Klan meeting at Camp Pendleton on November 13, 1976. In a contemporary interview, Mathews described the racism Black service members faced and defended opposition to Klan organizing inside the Marine Corps. Contemporary VVAW reporting identified his court-martial as scheduled for October 1, 1977. The available sources do not establish his individual release date or final disposition.
