Biography

Anthony Kovalsky was a Steel Workers’ Organizing Committee organizer. A Pittsburgh dispatch dated September 3, 1936 reports that police in Holidays Cove, West Virginia arrested and questioned Kovalsky and Richard Riser for half an hour before releasing them. After leaving a union meeting in Weirton, the two were stopped on the Weirton–Steubenville highway, severely beaten and hospitalized the previous night. The newspaper attributes the ambush to steel-company men and reports that union officials were considering proceedings against police chief Joseph Kerr; these are contemporary allegations, not adjudicated findings. The brief police detention is distinct from the subsequent private assault and hospitalization. Daily Worker, September 4, 1936, pages 1 and 6.
