Biography

Anthony “Kimu” White, also known as Kimu Olugbala, was associated with the Black Liberation Army. He was detained at Manhattan’s Tombs on attempted-murder charges and escaped in 1972. Historian Jarrod Shanahan documents his pretrial custody and the period preceding the escape. Safiya Bukhari’s memorial identifies him and recalls his death in a New York police shootout in January 1973. Contemporary accounts disagree on the precise day.

The February 1973 Liberated Guardian states that Anthony White, Kimu Olugbala, escaped from the Tombs “last November”, establishing November 1972 as the month his physical custody ended.
