Biography
Alvin Jeffers was a Chicago Black Panther arrested after the July 31, 1969 police siege of the party’s West Madison Street office. Three Panthers held the office during an exchange of gunfire, then surrendered after running out of ammunition. They were beaten and jailed on attempted-murder charges, with bail set at $20,000 each. The party organized a defense campaign for the three.
The issue names Alvin Jeffries with Larry White among three Chicago Panthers arrested for attempted murder after the office gunfight described in an interview with Bobby Rush. It reports bail set at $20,000 each and a campaign to obtain cash for bonds. This is the contemporary report’s spelling of the already identified prisoner’s name. Bail being set does not establish release, conviction or a complete custody duration, and the relative-date account does not replace stored dates.
