Biography
Alvarez Gil was a White Plains road striker whose detention, alleged police beating and habeas corpus proceedings were reported during the July 1931 road workers’ strike.
The July 18, 1931 Daily Worker reports that White Plains road workers were striking for a living wage, an eight-hour day and union recognition. In that context it identifies Alvarez Gil as a detained striker and reports that Justice Frederick P. Close dismissed an American Civil Liberties Union habeas corpus application for his release on the preceding day, July 17. The article says the justice criticized Patrolman Joseph McCue for striking Gil in the police station. The report also describes immigration raids and refusal of counsel to detained strikers, but does not establish a separate immigration charge or transfer destination for Gil individually. The habeas decision is not a release date. Exact arrest, admission, release and full custody duration remain unverified.
