Biography
Alden Whitman was a New York Times copy editor prosecuted after refusing to answer questions from the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee about alleged Communist Party associates. He was convicted of contempt of Congress and received a suspended six-month sentence and a $500 fine. The Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 1962, and the renewed prosecution eventually ended without Whitman serving jail time.
