Biography

Marshall describes A. R. Rutan, a minister of Fairmount in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, as arrested August 31, 1864 and twice again in October. A military proceeding at Harrisburg followed in late November, and he was held at Fort Mifflin until March 1, 1865. The account associates the arrests with the campaign against alleged disloyalty in the region. Source: John A. Marshall, American Bastile (1869), printed pages 312-314, https://archive.org/details/americanbastile00marsgoog/page/n325/mode/2up. Marshall is a partisan retrospective source; its allegations are attributed to the author.
