Biography
A. Kobel edited Uus Ilm, an Estonian Communist weekly in the United States. The Daily Worker of March 1, 1928, page 1, reports his arrest on January 24 after articles in the August 23, 1927 issue denounced the execution of Sacco and Vanzetti. He was taken to Ellis Island in deportation proceedings and subsequently released on $1,000 bail furnished by the International Labor Defense. Attorney Isaac Shorr was to argue his case before the Department of Labor. The article gives no full first name, exact bail-release day, completed deportation or total time confined. The June 1 International Labor Defense review names Uus Ilm editor A. Kobel among the deportation-defense cases after denunciations of the Sacco–Vanzetti executions. This is continuing defense context for the existing proceeding, not a new arrest or proof of completed deportation. The May 11 account places Kobel in Ellis Island detention while deportation proceedings were pending. This corroborates actual immigration custody in the existing case; a pending order is not treated as an accomplished removal or a new numerical term.
