Ruchell “Cinque” Magee was released from California Medical Facility in Vacaville on July 28, 2023, through compassionate release. He died on October 17, 2023, at age 84.
Legal Services for Prisoners with Children reported that Magee’s release followed advocacy under California’s revised compassionate-release law, AB 960. He had spent about 60 years in California custody.
Accounts describing 67 years of imprisonment include an earlier period in Louisiana. That total should not be presented as 67 years served in the California case.
His final months outside prison followed decades of organizing by relatives, lawyers and prisoner-support groups seeking his release.
