The litigation concerned materials discovered in the Philadelphia district attorney’s files in 2018 and arguments that evidence had been withheld from the defense. Abu-Jamal’s lawyers sought a new opportunity to challenge his conviction.
Prison Radio reported that attorneys Judith Ritter, Sam Spital and Bret Grote planned to seek review in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Supporters continued calling for his release while the legal challenge proceeded.
Abu-Jamal remained imprisoned under a life-without-parole sentence. The September ruling addressed the post-conviction petition; it did not reopen his trial.
