Biography
William Walter Hansen Jr., later the director of SNCC's Arkansas project, was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi, on July 8, 1961, for participating in the Freedom Rides and challenging segregation in interstate transportation — one of the arrests recorded by the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission and preserved in the Civil Rights Digital Library. The catalog establishes the arrest, the participation, and the individually identified police photograph, but not the court disposition, any transfer to Parchman, or the physical release date; those fields are unresolved pending county-jail, court, or penitentiary records.
December 1962 SNCC jail report
The December 19, 1962 Student Voice identifies William Hansen, SNCC field secretary, as one of two people jailed after trying to sit at a segregated Walgreens counter in Little Rock. It dates his arrest with Worth Long to November 28 and both men’s physical release on $500 bond each to November 30. This is a separate Arkansas episode, not the existing July 1961 Jackson Freedom Ride case. The article does not independently state the first physical jail-admission day; no arrest-to-release interval is automatically stored as an exact jail total, no final disposition is inferred, and the earlier case remains unchanged.
Arrest dates, physical jail admission, release on bond, imposed sentences and actual time served are kept distinct. The newsletter’s ages and group counts do not establish exact birth dates or the custody of unnamed demonstrators.
