Biography

William Spang was president of Fort Dukane lodge of the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers in Duquesne, Pennsylvania. The Daily Worker, June 3, 1935, page 1, reports that police arrested him and seven other lodge leaders at home on Friday morning, May 31, on a city-ordinance charge arising from their Memorial Day parade. It describes a $25 fine, officials making payment difficult, and transfer from the county jail after about an hour to its farm annex at Blawnox. Judge James Moore granted a writ of habeas corpus and Spang was released Friday night, addressing the union meeting later that night. The paper characterizes the arrests as a move to prevent preparation of the steel strike. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1935/v12-n132-NAT-jun-03-DW-Q.pdf
