Biography

William Gribb was a Black sharecropper jailed at Dadeville, Alabama, after the July 1931 Camp Hill repression of the Sharecroppers Union. In James S. Allen’s Organizing in the Depression South (published 2001, preface dated January 1984), Allen names him among prisoners charged with assault to murder and conspiracy to murder. The memoir describes twenty-nine jailed croppers, including nine minors, twenty-two releases within three weeks, and eventual release of the final seven after their cases were postponed indefinitely. It does not identify this prisoner’s particular release group or establish his exact arrest, physical discharge, sentence or complete custody duration. Its printed July 6 Thursday date is internally inconsistent and is not used as an exact arrest date. Source: https://www.marxists.org/archive/allen/organizing-south.pdf#page=83
